Does an Economy hotel experience always have to be a compromise? Accor Hotels that manages over 4000 hotels worldwide doesn’t think so. Accor revealed a new design vision for the Ibis brand as it launched the new Ibis Kolkata Rajarhat.

The Ibis Kolkata Rajarhat is located in Kolkata’s booming New Town area and Tech hub. It offers easy access to the Kolkata International Airport and the world class Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, one of India’s most impressive new Convention facilities. It’s also next door to the Novotel Kolkata and offers a host of shopping and dining options within walking distance.

The room size doesn’t deviate from the standard Ibis template but it’s the fresh design perspective and space management that sets it apart. My favourite feature is the new couch or day bed that replaces the work desk and the chairs. It doubles up as a relaxed work space and also allows you to curl up with your Kindle. The new Sweet Bed offers a comfortable night’s sleep. Local motifs are cleverly integrated into the room’s design language, while the wardrobe space has also been reimagined.

Magical sunrises at Victoria Memorial are just 30 minutes away from the hotel (Google Pixel 3XL)

The new design vision doesn’t stop at the rooms. It extends to the hotel’s funky exterior facade and public areas like the all-day diner – Spice It, that also serves local specialties. What impressed us most was the hotel’s back areas also reflect this high-energy design. I made a quick pitstop at the ‘back-of-the-house’ employee cafeteria (which the employees have nicknamed ‘Gupshup’) that exudes the same vibe.

The hotel is just 30-45 minutes away from some of the city’s most engaging experiences. Whether you want to experience a magical sunrise at the Victoria Memorial or get lost in one of North Kolkata’s busy streets that usually lead to an atmospheric heritage home. And then there are the city’s numerous ‘sweet distractions’. Bangla Misti hub, the city’s newest sweet destination that aggregates the city’s most iconic sweet shops is just 10 minutes away. Kolkata is a city of many faces, the new Ibis is a great starting point to discover this city.
