The Apple Watch Series 4 is the best smartwatch yet.
Of all the stuff Apple unveiled at its big September 2018 event, nothing impressed us more than the new Apple Watch Series 4. After four days with the GPS + Cellular version (Stainless steel / Gold), we can say that this watch lives up to all the hype. Here’s why:
Larger screen: you may not notice a bump up in a smartphone display that goes from 5.8-inches to 6.5-inches. But a smartwatch with a 30% plus screen real estate expansion is a big deal. Apple manages this by knocking off the bezels. This year’s 40mm/44mm are much larger (the smaller 40mm version is larger than last year’s 42mm) than its predecessors. So whether you are flipping through images or text messages, it’s way easier on the eye. The display also packs more pixels more inch; so, expect to be blown away if you’re moving up from a previous generation of Apple watch.
The new crown: We totally dig the new crown with haptic feedback, another example of skeuomorphic design (where design cues are taken from the real world) from Apple. You can hear each click as you scroll down menus or your calendar.
Hardware upgrades: at its heart is the new S4 chip (64-bit, dual-core) that Apple claims is twice as fast as the S3 chip in its predecessor. Apple Watch Series 4 also adds a new Electrical heart sensor. This will allow you to generate an ECG report with a touch of a button. Apple has announced this will go live in the US by the year end. There’s no official date for India yet and this will depend on approvals from regulatory authorities. All these hardware upgrades (including the new screen) have not impacted battery life. My battery didn’t drain till 6 pm on day two after topping the battery up at 9 am on day one. Of course, battery life is subjective depending on your usage patterns. The Samsung Galaxy Watch (46 mm version) and the Fitbit Versa have an edge in this department.
Watch OS 5.0: The new hardware improvements are matched by the all-new Watch OS 5.0. This new iteration brings a whole new set of watch faces that play up the size and add more complications (watch speak for additional details that do more than just tell the time). You can also experience this on previous editions of the Apple Watch.
Play Dick Tracy with ease: Apple has re-designed the speaker and the microphone. The speaker is now much louder, in case you use it for calls. The Cellular version allows you to make calls, send texts and stream music during your morning run, even if you’ve left your phone behind at home.
Apple Watch 4 makes the strongest case for a smartwatch. It’s the best smartwatch your money can buy but it doesn’t come cheap.
The Apple Watch Series 4 comes in both GPS and GPS + Cellular versions and starts at Rs 40,900. The top-end, Cellular edition 44mm stainless steel variant with Milanese Loop wristband costs Rs 80,900)
