Samsung Galaxy S9+ Review

Five reasons why this is the Android smartphone to beat in 2018

It’s never easy to go one up on a showstopper act. The Samsung Galaxy S8 was Samsung’s fitting reply to the PR woes of its Note 7 setback and the device that tempted even Apple loyalists to jump ship. The Infinity display was the S8’s wow factor; it changed the smartphone display forever and now, one year later the S9 duo are here. The S9 features a 5.8-inch display, while the S9+ is kitted with a 6.2-inch screen and a dual cam. Here’s our quick take:

Killer looks: the S8 and the S9 might look identical, like two twins separated at birth in a Bollywood production. But look closer and there’s a subtle difference. The fingerprint sensor has moved below the lens. So, two things – it’s easier to find and you won’t smudge your camera lens. It’s the same gorgeous all-glass form with the perfect curves. We totally dig the new colours – Coral blue and lilac purple.

Sharp shooter: a rear cam with a variable aperture. This is a first for a smartphone. The cam automatically detects the available light and alternates between a f/1.5 aperture and a f/2.4 aperture. If you thought the S8 shines in lowlight, wait till you see the results from this camera. This camera is clearly not afraid of the dark. The S9+ borrows from the dual cam (12MP + 12MP) strategy on the Note 8 and also features an 8MP front cam. A dual selfie cam would have sweetened the deal even further.

Hardware beast: At its heart is a 64-bit octa-core processor (2.7GHz Quad + 1.7GHz Quad) that teams up with 6GB of RAM. Samsung holds on to the expandable storage slot (that doubles up as an extra SIM slot and can support Micro SD cards up to 400GB) and offers a choice of 64GB and 256GB internal memory options.  This device is ready for anything you throw at it – gaming, multi-tasking. The 3500 mAh battery just about makes the cut. It works well as long as you’re not binge watching or clicking self-indulgent selfies all day.

Pocket-sized Entertainer: A 6.2-inch screen with a vibrant Super AMOLED screen (1440 x 2960 pixels / 529 PPI). The display specs might be similar to the the S8 but Samsung claims that the S9 is 15% brighter. It’s the same 18.5:9 that saw Samsung break new ground with the S8. The entertainment creds of the S9 don’t end there. Samsung has given the audio package a complete reboot – AKG-tuned stereo speakers that complement the infinity display. The perfect binge-watching entertainment accessory

Life in the slow lane: The S9’s slow-mo mode comes with a whole new bag of tricks. It can shoot videos at 960 FPS (Frames per second) but it’s the reverse slow-mo mode that lends this device an edge. You can transform everyday moments with this cam. (Check out the slow-mo sample:)

The S9+ and the S9 refine the new path that Samsung embarked on with the S8. The Bixby (Samsung’s digital assistant) experience is better, the camera is sharper and the fingerprint sensor isn’t a tough workaround anymore. It has it’s share of chinks – like the new AR Emojis that are clearly still work-in-progress. But those are minor cribs that don’t really dampen a solid smartphone experience. The S9+ is clearly the smartphone to beat in 2018.
