OnePlus Star Wars Limited Edition Review

OnePlus gives you another excuse to buy an insanely fast device

First, the disclaimer. This is a limited edition phone not a whole new phone. It’s been about three weeks since the Star Wars Edition debuted along with the Last Jedi. I’ve been puzzled to see some of the reviews and reactions. It’s almost like they expected an all-new device. OnePlus has always shown a predilection to greys and blacks. That’s one reason this device has our attention.

It feels good in your hands and is quite a looker: OnePlus shaved the bezels and stretched the display with the 5T. This limited edition builds on the same 6-inch display with an all-white chassis. OnePlus die-hards will totally dig the Sandstone texture on the back. It sets this phone apart. It’s likely to be a grime magnet though. We like the subtle Star Wars touches like the textured red slider and the branding on the rear. There’s also an edgy Kylo Ren case in the box that pays tribute to one of the franchise’s most popular characters.

The bezels have disappeared: One of the most noticeable changes over the OnePlus 5 is the display. The 5T comes with a 6-inch screen and an 80% screen: body ratio  The aspect ratio switches to 18:9 but the pixel density (1080 x 1920 pixels / 401 PPI) remains unchanged from the OnePlus 5. The device weighs almost the same despite the extra screen real estate and is easy to use with one hand.

It’s as fast as ever: 8GB RAM, 128GB on-board memory and a Snapdragon 835 processor. The Star Wars edition features the top-line specs from the 5T. The device is blazingly fast – multitasking is a breeze and it can handle any gaming challenge. Battery life is a huge positive too. The 3300 mAh battery keeps ticking; you are more than sorted for a day. Dash charging (OnePlus’ proprietary fast charging) is the icing on the cake.

Sharp shooter:  OnePlus tweaks its camera strategy too. The 5 took the iPhone 7 Plus route of a telephoto lens with its dual cam; the 5T sacrifices this lens for better lowlight images. You might love or loathe this move; especially if you like the zoom functionality. We think this is a smart move. There are better cameras in the 35,000-40,000 price band though.

Bottomline: The OnePlus 5T Star Wars Limited Edition is a great buy at its Rs 38,999 price tag. It’s clearly a dream device for Star Wars fans (there’s heaps of goodies like wallpapers and themes pre-loaded). But it works equally well even if you’re not a Star Wars fan. It’s one of the finest Android devices in the sub Rs 40,000 segment.
