The Park Chennai splits its rooftop Aqua into two and spins off the indoor space into a whole new dining experience.

The Park Chennai’s Aqua is almost always remembered as an outdoor space – the azure pool, cool cabanas and cocktails with great grills thrown in. The restaurant’s indoor space (yes most folks didn’t even know it existed) has always been overshadowed.

The indoors have been completely reimagined with a fresh lease of life – Aqua part 2 or ver 2.0, and so you get A2. We got a sneak peek of this space during launch night (in early April) and returned to see if this space packs the same charm during the day. It does. But if distress chic ain’t your scene, you might not dig the ripped ceiling. The Park hasn’t been shy to experiment since its Chennai debut in 2002 and it’s reassuring that the hotel hasn’t lost its spunk.

A2 is one of the first F&B spaces designed by Luxury product designer Gunjan Gupta and we love the funky ‘Potli Chairs’ that surround the Sushi Bar. The Sushi Rolls are the one reason we will be back here in a hurry; our favourite – the nigiri sushi rolls with Scottish Salmon and Yellow fin tuna. Scrumptious!

Small plates have been trending for a while Internationally and the A2 menu has an assortment of small plates – from bite sized tenderloin burgers to pork belly bao to a spicy Chorizo bowl (with chicken sausages). The menu is not voluminous (we like crisp menus) and the culinary team assures me that it will be refreshed every 2-3 months. Clever thinking! The dynamic menus don’t end there.  There’s also a blackboard menu that gets a weekly update.

A2 is the perfect place for a relaxed evening or lunch (the views of Aqua and the pool from a distance are eye candy during the Chennai summer) with your old buddies. Food that’s easy to pass around, cocktails with flashes of innovation and relaxed seating – there’s one catch though, some of these tables are better suited for finger friendly food but picking up a sushi roll with your chopsticks can be challenging. You won’t need those chopsticks for the multi-textured passion fruit semi freddo, one of the better sweet endings here.

A2 is at The Park Chennai (Nungambakkam High Road, Tel: 044-42144100) and is open for lunch and dinner. Meal for 2: Rs 2,500/-

Will we be back?: Hell, yeah!
